The Casentino

This is the largest valley in the north of the province of Arezzo. Known for its virtually intact harmony between humankind and nature, it is the most important nucleus of the National Park of the Casentino Forests.

One of the most charming historic towns in the Casentino, situated in the center of the valley. Given its prominent location, it was chosen as the site of the castle, which still commands the entire landscape.

borgo di poppi

Poppi old town

Recognized as one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy.

The old town is noted for its gates, which recall those of cities in Emilia. It is rare to find such gates in Tuscany, however.

What to see

In Poppi itself, there is the little church of Madonna del Morbo, facing the square, and the monastery and church complex of San Fidele, part of which is used for the local high school, as well as the majestic castle of the Conti Guidi.

The Conti Guidi

The name of Poppi has been linked since medieval times to the name of the Conti Guidi (Guidi counts), a powerful family that dominated the Casentino-Romagna area in the Middle Ages.

The castle

Apart from their legendary name, what remains in Poppi of the Guidi is the castle – a "must see". You'll visit the inner courtyard with its cistern, the rooms and frescoed salon on the main floor, and the chapel with frescos by Taddeo Gaddi, a pupil of Giotto's.

The Rilliana Library

The castle also houses the Rilliana Library. It takes its name from knight Rilli, who donated his private collection in the 19th century, forming the core of the current library holdings.

Exhibitions and events

Throughout the year, the castle and library are the venues of important events and exhibitions.

Santuario della Verna

In the vicinity

Other interesting visits are the castle and parish church of Romena, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Stia, and the historic center of Bibbiena.

How could we not mention two beautiful and spiritual places immersed in the verdant National Park – the Monastery and Hermitage of Camaldolia and the "rugged rock" of La Verna with its centuries-old Franciscan Sanctuary ?
